Consumers Will Struggle in Early 2010

The recession is over, and the economy has rebounded. GDP growth should be positive in the current quarter and remain positive until the next recession. However, consumers will be slow to enjoy the growth. Spending growth was positive in the third quarter thanks to the spike in vehicle sales generated by the cash for clunkers incentive. Beyond the temporary spike, the trend in spending will remain flat well into next year. Many of the reasons that spending will remain weak even in early 2010 are discussed below....
