August Retail Sales Surprisingly Strong

Retail sales were surprisingly strong in August. It is not clear, however, that this implies any more underlying strength in consumer spending. Sales rose 2.7% in total, 1.1% excluding autos, and 0.6% also excluding gas stations, which benefited from rising prices. Apparel, sporting goods and department stores all posted very strong gains. The only areas of weakness were furniture and building supply stores....
