Confidence Falling?!

Headlines have highlighted the declines in virtually all measures of consumer confidence in recent weeks. It is important to keep these declines in perspective, however. The indices have been moving little, seemingly trapped in narrow ranges for almost two years. Recent declines have moved the indices from the top end of the ranges to near the bottom. None has broken out of the range on the downside, however. Hence, the real story is not so much one of falling confidence but rather one of confidence that is failing to show any sign of improvement and remains at levels consistent with a deep recession....
