Statistics New Zealand (StatNZ) is the country's official statistical authority. It provides us with main economic indicators including building permits, the consumer price index, consumer retail sales, demography, employment, income, labor force, and national accounts.
The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) provides a housing market report at the regional level which includes median house prices.
Table 1 of 2. Summary of economic indicators. Available series occur at two geographic levels (region and district council) and at four frequencies (five years/censal, annual , quarterly or monthly). We obtain the bulk of the datasets from Statistics New Zealand. Geographic abbreviations are described in table 2.

Table 2 of 2. Summary of subnational geographic levels for New Zealand. This table shows the abbreviations as used in table 1 (among other area-types), the count of each type of area, and Data Buffet geography code patterns.
New Zealand has a national geo code of INZL and all codes for its geographic subdivisions use INZL as a prefix. For example, each of the district councils is identified as INZL(underscore)(letter)(letter), i.e., the basket geo wild card INZL_^^. By combining a concept code with a geo wild card, you can retrieve all the series for a given geographic level. For example, to fetch the series for live births for all district council areas, use VSQDTHUQ.INZL_^^.
(The "pattern" column uses "a" and "n" to indicate that letters and digits occur in certain positions, but when building expressions in the basket editor, the single-character wild card is "^", the caret.)
