A summary of changes to OMB-defined core-based statistical areas (metro areas) and their effect on Data Buffet geo codes, from 2006 to 2018, inclusive of Bulletin 20-01. [Updated 17 November 2020.]

Metropolitan statistical areas and related geographies (informally, "metro areas") in the United States are known as core-based statistical areas and consist of aggregated adjacent counties (or equivalent areas). CBSAs are defined by the White House Office of Management and Budget, which updates the list (approximately once per year) based on changes in population and commuting. Moody's Analytics defines corresponding geography codes for use in Data Buffet, and synchronizes with OMB's changes.

Our U.S. Metro Forecast product contains those areas listed by the OMB.

Changes of particular interest are:

• Sarasota, Florida, which has been redefined twice in recent years with consequent geo code changes, from MSAR to MBRA to MNPT.
• New York (MNEY), which contains four metro divisions, three of which were redefined between 10-02 and 13-01 (see related article).

Consequences to Data Buffet of OMB CBSA changes:

• Upon a name change, we update our geography database.
• Upon an identifier change, we create a new alphabetic geo code.
• We change our estimated and forecast time series to use the new geo code.
• We enter a new or replacement geo code into the applicable geography lists.

Moody's Analytics geo codes for different types of CBSAs look different. Census 2000 codes are as follows; for Census 2010 codes, prepend "IUSA_".

• M^^^  = metropolitan statistical area
• DM^^^ = metropolitan division
• O^^^  = micropolitan statistical area
• CS^^^ = combined statistical area

In this summary table, CBSAs are grouped by physical identity (regardless of name or constituent changes) and are ordered by state (or alphabetically-first state if they span state boundaries) and year of change. (For example, "2006" indicates Bulletin 06-01.) The "FIPS" column contains the official numeric identifier; the "MA" column contains our geo code.

Attached to this article is a Microsoft Excel worksheet with three additional columns that explain what specific action was performed and which constituent areas were involved.
