TitleFAQ: NAR home sales - Comparability
AuthorMatthew Hopkins
Question

Are the National Association of Realtors (NAR) monthly and quarterly home sales figures comparable? Do they examine the same population of dwellings?

Answer

Yes.  Although the NAR's titles (which we use) differ between its monthly and quarterly existing home sales data, the two series are comparable.  The quarterly series mentions "apartments" in addition to three other categories of dwelling, but the NAR has confirmed to us that the two datasets actually examine the same populations of homes.

Both series are expressed as a seasonally-adjusted annual rate (SAAR), so no frequency conversion is necessary.
