New Data: Cross-Country - Consumer Leverage Ratio
Monday, 08 Oct 2012 18:51 ET
By Karl Zandi
Summary
March 2012 -- Moody's Analytics has computed a consumer leverage ratio for an initial set of 27 countries.
Detail

Popularized by William Jarvis and Dr. Ian C MacMillan in a series of articles in the Harvard Business Review, the consumer leverage ratio quantifies the average consumer's relative debt burden and disposable income.  That is,

Ratio = (Total household debt / Disposable personal income)*100

If debt and income are equal, the ratio will equal 100; values greater than 100 indicate that debt exceeds income.

Using existing historical series in Data Buffet, Moody's Analytics intends to compute this ratio for a range of countries to facilitate comparative analysis.  Initial country availability is listed below.  Depending on the inputs, the frequency, adjustment, start and end dates of the derived time series will vary (note: baskets can contain mixed frequencies). The unified concept code DM%CHHDPI permits access despite the differences; for example, the ratio for Canada has the mnemonic DM%CHHDPI.ICAN.

You can do it too! With Data Buffet formulas (introduced here), you can combine one or more native time series with arithmetic operators to synthesize your own custom measures.  Formulas can be used with baskets, charts and maps.
