Population - The population of the Federal Republic of Germany encompasses all the inhabitants whose usual place of residence is within the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany, i.e. it includes all the foreigners registered in this territory. The Federal Republic of Germany is a densely populated country. Approximately 82 million inhabitants live here, which corresponds to a population density of 230 persons per square kilometre.

Births and Deaths - The statistics of births and deaths supply the basic demographic information on fertility, for assessing mortality conditions, life expectancy and the ageing of the population. Thus they provide fundamental data on living conditions. They serve as information for the public and as a basis for decisions in the fields of family and social policy. Additionally, they show the trends of the past until the latest reference year.

Marriages and Divorces - The statistics of marriages and final judgments in matrimonial causes supply the basic demographic information on the marriage behaviour, for assessing the divorce behaviour and the consequences of divorces. They serve as information for the public and as a basis for decisions in the fields of family and social policy. Additionally, they show the trends of the past until the latest reference year.

Migration - Based on the obligation to register, the statistics of migration records arrivals and departures of the population in Germany. Any movement into or out of a dwelling is regarded as migration, provided that it is the only or main place of residence (change of dwelling). When the status of a dwelling is altered, for instance a secondary place of residence becomes the main place of residence, this is regarded as migration. Guests at accommodation units and visitors staying with relatives or friends are obliged to register only when they stay for longer. According to the present registration requirements as laid down in the legislation of the Länder, this is mostly the case when the duration of a stay exceeds two months. The calling-up and release of persons doing compulsory military service is not regarded as migration.

The statistics of migration covers migration across the borders of the territory of Germany after 03 October1990 (external migration) and migration between municipalities within Germany (internal migration). When people move within municipalities, this is not recorded. Over time, the statistics of migration shows cases of migration, not persons moving.
In keeping with registration provisions, the basis of migration statistics are the registration and deregistration forms filed with the registration offices when the place of residence is changed. Registration/deregistration sheets are used to record in-migration and out-migration across the borders of Germany, while only the registrations sheets are used to cover migration within Germany. As the data to be submitted to the statistical offices of the Länder are part of the data contained in the registration/deregistration forms, there is no additional response burden for statistical purposes on the registration authorities (secondary statistics).
The surveys are conducted decentrally by the statistical offices of the Länder. Data are transmitted from the registration authorities to the statistical offices of the Länder mostly on electronic data media or on paper. The data scanned or entered are checked automatically and plausible data are examined.

Migration data are broken down by the following characteristics: areas of origin and destination, citizenship, age, gender, marital status and legal religious affiliation. Migration statistics have been compiled according to uniform methods since 1950

Households - In 2007 there were 39.7 million households in Germany, which consisted of approximately 82.4 million household members. Compared with 1991 the number of households increased by 13%, the number of household members by 3%. The average household size decreased: 2.27 persons on average lived in a household in 1991, but only 2.07 persons in 2007.
