Retail sales fell 1.8% in December to C$40.2 billion as a result of extreme weather. Lower sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers and building material and garden equipment and supplies stores led the decline. Excluding motor vehicle and parts dealers, retail sales lost 1.4%. Retail sales have increased in four of the past six months. In volume terms, sales declined for just the second time in 10 months, falling 2.2%. Nine of the 11 subsectors posted losses, representing 79% of retail sales. Sales were lower in every province.
