Retail sales increased 1.3% in January to C$40.7 billion, partially recovering the steep losses incurred in December due to the harsh winter weather. Excluding motor vehicle and parts dealers, retail sales rose 1%. Higher sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers and building material and garden equipment and supplies led sales higher. Retail sales have increased in five of the past seven months. In volume terms, sales rose 1.4%. Seven of the 11 subsectors posted gains, representing 83% of retail sales. Sales were higher in nine provinces.
