Retail sales soared in March, led by surging auto sales. Sales rose 1.1% in the month, and 0.7% excluding autos. Further, February growth was revised much higher. The shift in Easter sales from March last year to April this year made seasonal adjustment difficult and may have impacted the results. Sales in March were 3.8% above their year-ago level, weak, but about double February’s gain and the strongest since November. Strength was widespread, although sales fell at electronics and appliance retailers and gasoline stations. Leading growth were auto dealers, general merchandise stores, and building supply stores.
