Release Information

For Hong Kong SAR, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the changes over time in the price level of consumer goods and services generally purchased by households. The year-on-year rate of change in the CPI is widely used as an indicator of the inflation affecting consumers.

  • Classification: COICOP
  • Measurement: Fixed-base index relative to Oct 2014 to Sep 2015
  • Adjustments:
    • Not seasonally adjusted (NSA) - most series
    • Seasonally adjusted (SA) - small subset
  • Native frequency: Monthly
  • Start date: As early as 1974m7

Predecessors:

  • Oct 2009 to Sep 2010=100 - as early as 1974 to 2016
  • Oct 2004 to Sep 2005=100 - 2006 to 2011

Two types of data are required for compiling the CPI, they are the expenditure weights of consumer goods and services; and the price movements of consumer goods and services.

A Monthly Retail Price Survey is conducted by the C&SD to gather information on prices of pre-selected items from different types of retail outlets and service 5 providers throughout the territory. Price data are collected mainly by field visits, supplemented by telephone and postal enquiries.

The price index for each individual commodity or service item for the month concerned, which reflects the price change of the item since the base period, is first obtained. This is done by comparing its price in that month to the price in the base period.

No revision is made after the release of the index numbers.
