Motivation: Our pertinent national source, the National Bureau of Statistics of the People's Republic of China (NBS), reports employment by industry and city, but only for registered employment (i.e., persons with urban hukou), and at an annual frequency.

Response: We estimate the labor force status quartet and employment by detailed industry, for 29 select leading cities, based on the entire (both urban and rural hukou) population, at a quarterly frequency.
