During our routine QA checks, we observed a larger-than-usual inconsistency in eight pairs of as-reported SA and NSA series. In a direct communication, the source explained:
There are differences between seasonal adjusted and non-adjusted annual sums of quarterly GDP in the period 1981-1992. This is a drawback of our current seasonal adjustment methodology where the GDP-series starting at Q1 1993 is adjusted separately, using different methods, compared to the preceding period.
As many EU member states we are currently working on a benchmark revision of the National Accounts. Revised series will be published September 13th. The new series will at first begin in 1993. Corresponding series for 1981-1992 are scheduled to be published in November. At that time the methods for seasonal adjustment will be improved which should remove this particular discrepancy.
