Data Note: U.S. - UI claims for Puerto Rico and USVI
Thursday, 12 Oct 2017 12:13 ET
By Rosemary Herrmann
Summary
October 2017 -- The U.S. Department of Labor is currently estimating the monthly number of UI claims for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Island, and hence, the U.S. total.
Detail

In a direct communication with the U.S. Department of Labor, we have learned that, because of the statistical interruption in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, they are currently estimating (starting with August 2017) the number of unemployment insurance (UI) claims for the two island territories.

The series include:

  • XUNI.IUSA = Initial unemployment claims, (#, NSA) - for the U.S.
  • XUNI.PR   = Initial unemployment claims, (#, NSA) - for Puerto Rico
  • XUIGMM.VI = Insured unemployment - Male, (#, NSA) - for USVI

Please be aware that:

  • Most U.S. macroeconomic datasets omit the insular territories from the U.S. total. Conversely, the USDOL UI dataset does count Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands; but not American Samoa, Guam, or the Northern Marianas.
