Estimates Revision: Spain - Retail sales - Source
Tuesday, 02 Apr 2019 21:57 ET
By Richard Cross
Summary
March 2019 -- For our estimates of retail sales in Spain, to improve timeliness, transparency, and data security, we have switched to use the national source directly (eight quarterly series impacted).
Detail

Moody's Analytics strives to use the most timely and accurate data available, generally favoring national sources over cross-national aggregators such as Eurostat. We also strive for data security, i.e., that historical data are disseminated on a predictable basis. Because Eurostat occasionally withdraws retail sales data for Spain as confidential, we have opted to directly tap Spain's national source.

For Europe, to estimate the level of retail sales at high frequency we use a level (reported at low frequency) and a growth rate expressed as an index (reported at high frequency). We have changed our source for the latter. There is no change to the industrial definition, i.e., NACE Rev. 2 division G47.

  • Impacts:
    • Estimates of retail sales for Spain during earlier years
    • Estimates of retail sales for euro zone aggregates
  • Previous method:
    • Source: Eurostat dataset sts_trtu_m
    • Type: Cross-national aggregator
  • Current method:
    • Source: INE (Instituto Nacional de Estadistica)
    • Type: National source

The series reside in the historical catalog (Spain » Consumer » Retail sales » Moody's Analytics Estimated) and include, for example:

  • RRTQ.IESP     = Nominal retail sales, (Mil. EUR, SAAR)
  • RRT$Q.IESP    = Real retail sales, (Mil. 2010 EUR, SAAR)
  • RRTUSD$Q.IESP = Real retail sales, (Mil. Ch. 2009 USD, SAAR)
