Introduction
The Moody's Analytics suites of subnational estimates provide standardized and comparable indicator coverage over time for areas within a given country. Starting with official reporting that is variously incomplete or inconvenient, we aim for short lag and high frequency (by harvesting directly from national sources), for regional detail, and for complete coverage. Longer, consistent time series contain more business cycles; this benefits analysis, modeling, and our forecasts.
The estimates reside in the historical catalog for China, within each themed folder, under the "Moody's Analytics Estimated" nodes. To jump into the Data Buffet catalog, append the geo code ".ICHN" to a concept code, then search using "find in catalog" mode. Methodologies for each indicator are presented in Mnemonic 411.
A tabular summary is attached, with each indicator family, concept code, geo coverage, start date, and measurement units.
- Blue cells (wild card concept code): We estimate breakdowns for these indicators according to the most recent GB/T 4754 industries.
- White cells (#): Full coverage of all areas within the geo level.
- Orange cells (*): Partial coverage within the geo level.

Geographic summary
The People's Republic of China considers itself to have 34 first-level administrative divisions (provinces and similar) but the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reports only 31 areas, and we have followed this policy. The remaining three areas (Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, and Taiwan (Province of China)) operate independent statistical agencies, and are outside the scope of this estimation suite.
(For naming convenience, Data Buffet sometimes assigns country/jurisdiction-level geo codes to areas that are not unambiguous sovereign entities, as with the insular territories of the U.S.. To Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan (Province of China), we have assigned geo codes IHKG, IMAC and ITWN, respectively.)
