Data Revision: Indonesia - GDP(E) SA - Method
Thursday, 07 Mar 2019 12:58 ET
By Katie Cristofano
March 2019 -- For the quarterly detailed expenditure approach to gross domestic product for Indonesia, we compute seasonally adjusted supplements, and have switched from X-12 to X-13, among other changes (40 quarterly series, revised from 1990).

Motivation: The Statistics Indonesia of the Republic of Indonesia reports GDP by expenditure in current and constant prices, but only from 2010Q1, and only in not seasonally adjusted (NSA) terms. Previously, we created our seasonal factors using the X-12 ARIMA program, but we are now incrementally migrating all releases to X-13 ARIMA.

Response: For all NSA GDP(E) series, we have re-extended prior to 2010Q1. For our seasonal factors, we have recalculated using the X-13 program, and have revised the SA series. What you will see:

  • All 20 GDP(E) NSA series revised, from 1990Q1 to 2009Q4.
  • All 20 GDP(E) SA series revised, from 1990Q1 to 2018Q4.

Properties: Properties are otherwise unchanged. Series start as early as 1990Q1. Expect our SA supplements to be revised with each update. The series carry a secondary source citation of "Moody's Analytics Estimated" or "Moody's Analytics Adjusted".

The series reside in the historical catalog (Indonesia » National Accounts » by Expenditure) and include, for example:

  • NALEGDPUQ.IIDN = National accounts: Expenditure approach - Gross domestic product, (Bil. IDR, NSA)
  • NALEGCFUQ.IIDN = Gross capital formation, (Bil. 2010 IDR, NSA)
  • NALETBAQ.IIDN  = Trade balance, (Bil. IDR, SAAR)
  • NACEEXAQ.IIDN  = Exports - Goods and services, (Bil. 2010 IDR, SAAR)

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.

  1. Extend reported NSA GDP(E) components, prior to 2010Q1, using their reported predecessors.
  2. Compute as NSA identities: consumption expenditure for households and for NPISHs, gross capital formation, and trade balance.
  3. Compute as NSA identities prior to 2010Q1: changes in inventories and statistical discrepancy.
  4. Individually adjust GDP by expenditure components, using the U.S. Census Bureau's X-13 ARIMA program.
  5. Compute SA identities: trade balance, changes in inventories, and statistical discrepancy.
