On 10 September, the source wrote (citation, pdf):
The results published today are based on a new sample. This is an annual procedure which typically affects the level of sales. To avoid breaks in time series and to minimise revisions to historical growth rates, historical sales levels were revised (i.e. they were linked to the estimates based on the new sample).
The July 2019 results use a sample drawn in April 2019. Values from January 1998 to June 2019 and based on the April 2018 sample were replaced. These revisions apply only to the value of sales data; the related indexes of production volume are unaltered.
Dataset properties:
- Classification: SIC 5, the localization of UN ISIC Rev. 3
- Measurement: Thousands of South African rands (Ths. ZAR)
- Adjustment: Seasonally adjusted (SA) or not (NSA)
- Native frequency: Monthly
- Start date: 1998m1
The series reside in the historical catalog (South Africa » Industry » Manufacturing » 2015=100 » Value) and include, for example:
- TNLVAMFAM.IZAF = Sales for all manufacturing [3], (SA)
- TNLVA34AM.IZAF = Glass, non-metallic mineral products [34], (SA)
- TNLVA36UM.IZAF = Electrical machinery [36], (NSA)
Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com, provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.
About the dataset
With the release of July data each year, Stats SA publishes sales data under a new survey sample. Re-sampling is conducted to account for the evolving nature of businesses and to capture changes related to new businesses, ceased businesses, merged businesses and classification changes.
With each sample revision, the source backcasts the entire history to January 1998 to create a complete, revised dataset.
