As of 2011, an administrative reform merged three pairs of areas (large city and surrounding county) and promoted one city. To describe this redefinition, we declared separate geo codes. The change impacts the SICS Rev. 8 and Rev. 9 subsets.

Despite the similar names, Taipei City and New Taipei City are physically and administratively distinct areas.
The term "subnational" in this context denotes "areas contained within the area designated by a country-type geo code". For statistical convenience, Data Buffet assigns country-type geo codes to Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, and Taiwan ROC.
