Data Change: Brazil - CCI - Method
Thursday, 08 Aug 2019 08:19 ET
By Megan Hilaman
Summary
July 2019 -- For the "National Consumer Confidence Index" (INEC) of Brazil, concurrent with dissemination of results for April, the source has changed its form and frequency (seven monthly series 2001 to 2018, replaced by seven quarterly series from 2009).
Detail

On 6 May, the source wrote (citation):

Reformulation of the INEC

The Consumer Confidence Index (INEC) has changed. The results will now be released as a diffusion index ranging from 0 to 100 points instead of a fixed-base index. Readings above 50 points indicate confident consumers, while readings below 50 points show a lack of confidence.

The index will now be released on a quarterly basis. Exceptionally, the first result for 2019 refers to the month of April and not March. The historical series have been recalculated from 2009 to reflect the change in periodicity and the new methodology.

In response, we have:

  1. Archived the predecessors (index 2001=100, 2001m3 to 2018m12) by renaming with an "_18" specifier, marking metadata as "discontinued", and segregating in the catalog.
  2. Created one-for-one replacements (diffusion index), which start at 2009Q1.

Dataset properties:

  • Measurement: Diffusion index (Dif. Index=50)
  • Adjustment: Not seasonally adjusted (NSA)
  • Native frequency: Quarterly
  • Start date: 2009Q1

The series reside in the historical catalog (Brazil » Cyclical Indicators » Consumer survey » Diffusion index | Fixed-base index) and include, for example:

  • CIICSICC_18UM.IBRA = [DISCONTINUED] Cyclical Indicators: Consumer survey - Consumer confidence, (Index 2001=100, NSA)
  • CI%CNFCSTTUQ.IBRA  = Consumer confidence index: Total, (Dif. Index=50, NSA)
  • CI%CNFCSPRFUQ.IBRA = Expected inflation - Next 6 months compared to previous 6 months
  • CI%CNFCSUNFUQ.IBRA = Expected unemployment - Next 6 months compared to previous 6 months

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.
