Data Revision: Canada subnational - Population SA - Method
Tuesday, 21 Jan 2020 15:11 ET
By Kelli Johnson
Summary
January 2020 -- For quarterly population for Canada and its 13 provinces, Moody's Analytics produces seasonally adjusted counterparts. We have switched from X-12 to X-13 and revised our method for national population (15 quarterly series revised from 1946).
Detail

Motivation: Our national source reports quarterly population for Canada and its 13 provinces in not seasonally adjusted (NSA) terms; hence, we create seasonally adjusted (SA) supplements. Previously, we created our seasonal factors using the X-12 ARIMA program, but we are now incrementally migrating all releases to X-13 ARIMA.

Response: For country and provinces, we have recalculated seasonal factors using the X-13 ARIMA program, and have revised seasonal supplements over their full history.

Properties: Properties are otherwise unchanged. Series start as early as 1946Q1 for the nation, and 1951Q3 for Canada's Provinces.

The series reside in the historical catalog:

  • Canada » Demographics » Population » Estimates » Total

Method

Inputs:

  1. Provincial VSPOPUQ.ICAN_^^, from 1951Q3
  2. National VSQPOPUQ.ICAN, from 1946Q1

Steps:

  1. For provinces (input (a)), seasonally adjusted using the U.S. Census Bureau's X-13 ARIMA program.
  2. For national SA, 1946Q1 to 1951Q2, seasonally adjust input (b) directly.
  3. For national SA, from 1951Q3, compute as an identity, viz., sum over provinces (step (1)).
