The national statistical sources for France report national-level data in two ways: with or without the five "overseas departments" or "DOMs" (namely, Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Réunion, and Mayotte) which together contain only 3% of the Republic's population. When the DOMs are omitted, the aggregate is known as "France métropolitaine" or "metropolitan France."
For convenience in Data Buffet retrievals, we assign the national geo code IFRA whenever possible. If there is only one "national" area reported, regardless of its definition, we use IFRA. If there are two areas reported, we assign IFRA to the principal series (as deemed by the source), and IFRA_NDOM or IFRA_XDOM to the other, as appropriate. For specifics, please consult the background page in Mnemonic 411.
Unless otherwise noted:
- IFRA = IFRA_XDOM + IFRA_DOMR
