Data Note: Cross-country - IMF International Financial Statistics - Erroneous data from IMF
Friday, 01 Dec 2017 15:04 ET
By Richard Cross
Summary
December 2017 -- We have observed an unusually high level of erroneous data provided by the IMF in their "International Financial Statistics," and have taken mitigating steps.
Detail

In each case where our internal quality control processes have detected anomalous values in the IFS data, we have established that the Data Buffet extract is verbatim (i.e., matches the data published by the IMF on their website), indicating that quality issues were not caused by Moody's Analytics Data Services. Where possible, we compare the IMF data against individual national sources to substantiate the error; otherwise, we contact the IMF, which has confirmed the values were incorrect.

We have mitigated the impact of these changes for clients in these ways:

  1. Where possible, our forecast and estimated datasets use nationally-sourced data, rather than cross-national sources such as the IMF.
  2. We have contacted the IMF for each error to bring it to their attention to correct on subsequent IFS updates.
  3. Where possible, we have reverted historical data in our forecasts to the most recent correct vintage of the IFS data.
