Motivation (fundamentals): In September 2012, the Federal Reserve Board (FRB) revised their monthly consumer credit data, causing a large level break between November and December 2010 (see related article).
Response (supplements): To improve analysis, we have created break-adjusted counterparts for the three major consumer credit levels, presented in not seasonally adjusted (NSA) and seasonally adjusted (SA) terms. Compare, for example:
- XCCLALLTM.IUSA - Consumer credit as-reported, (NSA)
- XCCLALLTBM.IUSA - Break-adjusted, (NSA)
- CCLALLTBM.IUSA - Break-adjusted, (SA)
Properties: The time series start at either January 1943 or January 1968. Figures are expressed in billions of U.S. dollars (Bil. USD) either SA or NSA. Expect the supplements to be revised with each new historical value appended to fundamentals. The dataset resides in the historical catalog (United States » Financial » G.19 - Consumer Credit » Credit outstanding - Levels) and includes, for example:
- XCCLALLTBM.IUSA - Total consumer credit, (Bil. USD, NSA) - From 1943
- XCCLREVTBM.IUSA - Revolving consumer credit, (NSA) - From 1968
- CCLNRVTBM.IUSA - Nonrevolving consumer credit, (SA) - From 1943
Note that these series use a geo code of ".IUSA" instead of the older ".US".
Method: Please see Mnemonic 411.
