The scope of the dataset is commercial banking. Figures are millions of Mexican pesos (Mil. MXN) not seasonally adjusted (NSA). The series start at December 2003.
The series reside in the historical catalog (Mexico » Banking » Loans outstanding) and include, for example:
- MBLALNTTUM.IMEX = Commercial banking: Loans outstanding - All sectors, (Mil. MXN, NSA)
- MBLALNHHUM.IMEX = Non-financial private sector - Households
- MBLALNHHHUM.IMEX = Households - Mortgage loans
Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.
About the dataset
Our extract includes the "loans to all sectors" total and the "to households" sector (hogares), but not the other reported sectors.
Social interest housing (vivienda interés social) is government-subsidized, usually in large tracts on the periphery of a city.
Payroll lending (nómina) is an advance on wages, made by the bank through which the wages are delivered and secured by the expectation of ongoing wages. Unlike payday loans in the U.S., this mechanism is widely used in Mexico and not predatory.
Durable goods lending (bienes de consumo duradero) is divided into motor vehicle loans (automotriz) and adquisición de bienes muebles, which may be translated "movable property" (as opposed to "immovable property" or real estate) or "furnishings".
The source (Bank of Mexico) has Spanish- and English-language pages. We have observed that Google Translate produces misleading results when applied to the former.
Each series has a unique identifier in Bank of Mexico's bulk data portal, which is notated in square brackets in our source metadata.
