Data Change: U.S. - BOC wholesale and retail - Reclassified to NAICS 2012
Monday, 26 Nov 2018 13:22 ET
By Phillip Thorne
Summary
April 2018 -- The Census Bureau's suite of wholesale and retail surveys have been reclassified from NAICS 2007 to NAICS 2012. We are working to modify our mnemonics for international consistency, wild card flexibility, and to differentiate them from Moody's Analytics estimates. The first changes apply to the annual surveys (AWTS and ARTS).
Detail

1. Schedule

  • Annual Wholesale Trade Survey (AWTS) - 14 March
  • Annual Retail Trade Survey (ARTS) - 21 March
  • Revisions to monthly retail data - 25 May
  • Advance Monthly Retail Trade Report - TBD
  • Monthly Retail Trade Report - TBD

2. Implications

Branches of NAICS applicable to retail sales have been reorganized as follows. The redefinitions are at the six-digit level, but for some branches the retail datasets publish only to the five-digit level; if so, the redefinition has no visible effect.

3. BOC has back-calculated and published full history.

4. We are taking this opportunity to standardize the mnemonics, with these goals:

  • Adopt our international concept code structure.
  • Use wild card-friendly concept codes for additional indicators specific to the U.S.
  • Cease using the concept code prefix "R", which is now reserved for Moody's Analytics estimates.

Provisionally, the changes are as follows, where "..." is the "kind of store" segment, represented by the numeric NAICS code or an alphabetic aggregate.

IndicatorOld patternNew patternUnits
Sales RT...A WRLSL...UA Mil. USD
Sales per capita RTP...CA WRLPC...UA USD
Purchases RTP...A WRLPU...UA Mil. USD
Gross margin RTGM...A WRLGM...UA Mil. USD

Accounts receivable RT(T,O,C)...A WRLA(T,O,C)...UA Mil. USD

We have renamed the predecessors (NAICS 2007) with an archive specifier (RT..._I2007UA).
