Data Fix: U.S. subnational - BEA LAPI - Partial
Tuesday, 13 Aug 2019 08:11 ET
By Keith Golden
Summary
August 2019 -- For the BEA's "Local Area Personal Income" dataset, we have corrected erroneous values caused by revisions to data that were missed during a previous update (1,025,106 annual series revised 2001 to 2017; 414 NEW annual series from 2001).
Detail

During a quality check, we detected erroneous values in our extract. In a recent format change by the BEA, "estimated" values now consist of a number plus an "E" suffix, and our read-process skipped these, thereby missing revised and appended periods.

In response, we have:

  1. Amended our read-process so that these "E" values are correctly read into our extract.
  2. Updated existing series with the latest periods and revisions to prior periods (1,025,106 series revised, 2001 to 2017).
  3. Added concept-geo combinations not previously read into our extract (414 new series from as early as 2001).

Dataset properties:

  • Measurements: Thousands of U.S. dollars (Ths. USD), millions thereof (Mil. USD), thousands of persons (Ths. #)
  • Seasonal adjustment: Not applicable
  • Geo coverage: Combined statistical area, MSA, micropolitan statistical area, county, metropolitan/non-metropolitan portion of state
  • Native frequency: Annual
  • Start date: As early as 2001

The majority of the series reside in the historical catalog (United States » Income » Personal income » Annual » Key indicators | by Industry) and include, for example:

  • YPE115A.IUSA_MJAT   = Income: Agriculture and forestry support activities, (Mil. USD) - for Jackson, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area
  • YPE446A.IUSA_OHOP   = Income: Health and personal care stores, (Mil. USD) - for Hope, AR Micropolitan Statistical Area
  • YPEC326A.IUSA_CSGRN = Income: Compensation - Plastics and rubber products manufacturing, (Mil. USD) - for Greensboro--Winston-Salem--High Point, NC Combined Statistical Area

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.
