New Estimates: Australia Subnational - Summary
Wednesday, 12 Oct 2011 12:12 ET
By Megan Perkinson
Summary
May 2011 -- We announce a broad range of national and subnational quarterly estimates for Australia.
Detail

As of May 2011, Moody's Analytics Data Buffet offers new estimates of national and subnational economic data for Australia.  Economic sectors include consumer, credit quality, demographics, income, labor and wages, national accounts, prices, and real estate.  All estimated series have a quarterly frequency.  Geographic coverage varies.

Please note that Australia does not officially define or enumerate metropolitan areas, but we have defined "MSAs" for our own purposes.  See table 3 for our definition.

The subnational estimates dataset for Australia is part of the Moody's Analytics Global Database product.  Please contact your sales representative for details.

Addendum

We originally published estimates for Australia, the states, and the eight capital city metropolitan areas on June 28, 2011.  We expanded to statistical divisions and the Gold Coast metropolitan area on September 30, 2011.

Table 1.  Australian subnational estimates - Concept codes and geographic coverage.  Most indicators, except for CPI and HPI, are available at all geo levels.  To see a listed indicator alongside related concepts in the catalog, use a headline concept with the ".IAUS" geo code, and search with "find in catalog" mode.  Where a wild card is listed, a breakdown is available.

Table 2. Geographic structure for Australian subnational estimates.  We produce estimates for all major areas at the following geographic levels.  A level is recognizable by the structure of its geo code.  To retrieve all available areas at a certain level, use the wild cards as shown.

Name Abbv. Count Coverage Geo Code Wild Card
Nation   1 1 IAUS
States and Territories S/T 9 9 IAUS_^^
Statistical Division SD 61 8 IAUS_^^^
Metropolitan Area MSA 0 8 IAUS_M^^^

Note: These areas differ in a few respects from the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC), 2009 version (the latest version is July 2010).  It defines nine codes for 11 states and territories, in which Jervis, Christmas Island and Cocos are combined as a single outlying territory.  ASGC defines 61 statistical divisions; it lumps the three outlying territories together, but we separate them.

Table 3. How we defined nine metropolitan areas based on AGSC's statistical divisions.  For more detail, please see the related article.
