Known as Ciudad de Buenos Aires or Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires (CABA) (IARG_BAC), the federal capital and largest city of Argentina is an autonomous district, separate from the surrounding province (analogous to the status of the District of Columbia).
The surrounding province of Buenos Aires is divided into 135 partidos (this second-level division is unique to the province; the other provinces use departamento). CABA plus the 24 adjoining partidos comprise Gran Buenos Aires (GBA) (IARG_GBA). This terminology has been used by INDEC since 2003; previously, Región metropolitana had the same meaning.
The Aglomerado Gran Buenos Aires (AGBA) is a more inclusive aggregate based on the "population envelope". This definition changes over time and is not represented in our extract.
Provincia de Buenos Aires (IARG_BA) is one of 23 provinces in the country.
