New Data: China - Retail sales growth rates
Tuesday, 18 Sep 2018 22:01 ET
By Annie Kao
Summary
September 2018 -- Data Buffet now carries the year-on-year growth rates for retail sales for urban and rural areas in China (four new monthly series from 2010).
Detail

Dataset properties:

  • Measurement: Year-over-year percent change (% Y/Y)
  • Cumulation: Year-to-date (YTD) or not
  • Seasonal adjustment: Not seasonally adjusted (NSA)
  • Native frequency: Monthly
  • Start date: January 2010
  • Gaps:
    • For cumulative, January of each year from 2012
    • For non-cumulative, January and February of each year from 2012

The series reside in the historical catalog (China » Consumer » Retail sales » Monthly » by Location) and are:

  • WR%CGUYUM.ICHN  = Retail sales: Consumer goods - Urban, (% Y/Y, NSA)
  • WR%CGRYUM.ICHN  = Rural, (% Y/Y, NSA)
  • WR%CGUYYUM.ICHN = Urban, (% Y/Y YTD, NSA)
  • WR%CGRYYUM.ICHN = Rural, (% Y/Y YTD, NSA)

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.

Please be aware that

Given time series data expressed as a level, many analytic variants are possible; but for brevity, Data Buffet carries only the simplest if the others can be reconstituted using our analytic transformations. In this case, however, we have determined that the levels and growth rates published by NBS do not align; hence, we republish verbatim both variants.

The "urban/rural" distinction probably pertains to the hukou system (household registration), which is used in many datasets from NBS.
