Geo Note: France subnational - National aliases
Tuesday, 23 Oct 2018 12:37 ET
By Elizabeth Felton, Jason Flynn, Richard Grim
Summary
October 2018 -- For the area "France métropolitaine" and "France incl. overseas departments" we have deprecated geo codes IFRA_MET and IFRA_NDOM in favor of IFRA_XDOM and IFRA, respectively.
Detail

The national statistical sources for France report national-level data in two ways: with or without the five "départements d'outre-mer". These "overseas departments" or "DOMs" (namely, Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Réunion, and Mayotte) together contain only 3% of the Republic's population. When the DOMs are omitted, the aggregate is known as "France métropolitaine" ("metropolitan France").

Previously, Data Buffet contained duplicate geo codes for the geographic aggregates. A single series might use one geo code, the other, or both (as an alias). For consistency, we have now deleted all aliases using geo code IFRA_MET or IFRA_NDOM. Further use of legacy retrievals will elicit the "series not found" error. To update to IFRA_XDOM or IFRA, respectively, the basket editor provides a "find and replace" tool.

  • IFRA_MET  = Metropolitan France (before)
  • IFRA_XDOM = France excl. overseas departments (after)
  • IFRA_NDOM = France incl. overseas departments (before)
  • IFRA      = France (after)

Note that "overseas departments" plus "metropolitan France" constitutes total France (IFRA_DOMR + IFRA_XDOM = IFRA).
