New Data: Canada subnational - LFS employment by industry - Addendum
Tuesday, 06 Nov 2018 17:02 ET
By Keith Golden
Summary
October 2018 -- For subnational employment by industry for Canada, we have added nine industries for the country and ten provinces (98 new annual series from 1987). We have also extended existing series (1976 to 2000).
Detail

Dataset properties:

  • Industry classification: NAICS
  • Industry scope: Agriculture [11] to public administration [91]
  • Measurement: Thousands of persons (Ths. #)
  • Geo coverage: Country, all 10 provinces
  • Native frequency: Annual
  • Start date: As early as 1987

The new industries are:

  • Durables [321, 327, 331 to 339]
  • Non-durables [311 to 316, 322 to 326]
  • Three subgroups under forestry, fishing and mining
  • Wholesale trade [41]
  • Retail trade [44 to 45]
  • Finance and insurance [52]
  • Real estate and rental and leasing [53]

For 209 existing employment by industry series, at the national and provincial geo levels, we have extended with as-reported history back to 1976. Previously, these series started at 2001.

The series reside in the historical catalog (Canada » Labor Markets » Labor Force Survey (LFS) » Estimates » Employment by industry » Annual) and include, for example:

  • LWQEM41UA.ICAN    = Employment - Wholesale trade [41], (Ths. #)
  • LWQEM52UA.ICAN_MB = Employment - Finance and insurance [52], (Ths. #) - for Manitoba

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.

Please be aware that

We have notated the industry composition in the description metadata of each series, in square brackets. We have used the source's symbology verbatim, even if it's anomalous. For example, "mining, quarrying, oil and gas extraction" is marked as [21, 2100], although 2100 is conterminous with 21.
