In response, we have replaced the series. For clarity, we have deleted most of the predecessors, and the replacements contain full published history, from as early as 1975.
Consistent with changes to the Blue Book, the reference year has moved from 2011=100 to 2012=100 and the base year for chained volume measures form 2011 to 2012. Figures are presented in current prices (millions of British pounds sterling, Mil. GBP) or as volume indexes (Index 2012=100). There are two presentations, seasonally adjusted (SA) or not (NSA). The classification is SITC.
The data reside in the historical catalog (United Kingdom » Trade » Foreign Trade » Detailed ONS Indicators) and include, for example:
- ONSTRLGCTM.IGBR = Exports - Total trade in goods, (Index 2012=100, SA) - Monthly
- ONSTRSFKUQ.IGBR = Balance - Finished manufactures [7+8], (Mil. GBP, SA) - Quarterly
- ONSTRBQQWA.IGBR = Imports - Beverages and tobacco [1], (Mil. GBP) - Annual
Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.
About this change:
- As of 1 January 2015, Lithuania joined the European Monetary Union (EMU). Therefore the EMU totals include Lithuania.
About this dataset, the source writes:
- UK Trade shows the extent of import and export activity and is an important contributor to the overall economic growth of the UK. Trade is measured through both imports and exports of goods and/or services.
- The "UK Trade" dataset is an input to the U.K. quarterly national accounts (QNA) and balance of payments.
- This dataset focuses more on trade in goods due to the coverage and comprehensiveness of the administrative data sources available for goods as well as it being easier to quantify and measure. Trade in services is harder to measure, and source data is provided mainly on a quarterly or annual basis principally from ITIS (International Trade in Service). Monthly estimates are created using this quarterly data on services, therefore the data are less robust on a monthly basis compared with goods.
- In months where quarterly and 3-monthly ending percentage changes for index data coincide, there may be small differences between the data for methodological reasons. Quarterly data are the indexed form of an underlying constant price (for volume indices) or consistent quantity (for price indices) series. 3-month ending data are the average of the index data in that period.
- The sum of constituent items in tables does not always agree exactly with the totals shown due to rounding.
