Data Change: India - IPI - Reclassified and rebased to 2011-12
Tuesday, 11 Jul 2017 04:15 ET
By Michaela Dvorakova
Summary
July 2017 -- The source has reclassified the detailed industrial production index for India from NIC-1998 to NIC-2008, and the base year has been advanced from 2004-05 to 2011-12 (33 monthly series 2004-2017, replaced by 34 from 2012). We have synchronized our SA supplement.
Detail

In response, we have archived the predecessors (NIC-1998, 2004-05=100, April 2004 to March 2017) by renaming with an "_05" specifier, by marking metadata as discontinued, and by segregating in the catalog. The replacements (NIC-2008, 2011-12=100) start at April 2012 and have standardized mnemonics. Reported figures are not seasonally adjusted (NSA).

The series reside in the historical catalog (India » Industry » Industrial production index) and include, for example:

  • IPIFBV_05UM.IIND = [DISCONTINUED] Food products and beverages, (2004-05=100, NSA)
  • IPIKG_05UM.IIND  = [DISCONTINUED] Capital goods, (2004-05=100, NSA)
  • IPIKGUM.IIND     = Capital goods, (2011 to 2012=100, NSA)
  • IPITTUM.IIND     = General index, (2011 to 2012=100, NSA)

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.

About the dataset:

  • As with many datasets for India, the index base period spans two calendar years.
  • For NIC, the [India] National Industrial Classification, versions NIC-1998 and -2008 are comparable to UN ISIC Rev. 3 and Rev. 4, respectively.
  • The "use-based classification" is similar to the main industrial groupings (MIG) for NACE. It has been expanded from five to six items, and the "basic goods" category has been renamed "primary goods" -- no relation to the "primary/secondary/tertiary" three-sector breakdown.

About our extract:

  • For the replacement series, we have standardized mnemonics where possible -- in particular, the manufacturing detail items embed the numeric code for the NIC branch, and the use-based categories resemble MIG.
  • For analytic convenience and international consistency, we produce a seasonally adjusted counterpart to the general index.
