In a direct communication, the source explained:
We are not allowed to publish index series from which individual companies’ can be calculated to a sufficient precision. Since there is a legally enforced monopoly on alcohol sales in Sweden, we cannot publish NACE 47.25 since it is by law restricted to a single company. Our primary domestic users are more interested in retail sale of mostly food without the sale of alcoholic beverages, so from last August’s publication we decided that our main “mostly food” aggregate will consist of NACE 47.11+47.2 excluding 47.25, and similarly for specialized stores for food, beverages and tobacco.
In response, we have:
- Archived the predecessors ([47; 47.2], 1991m1 to 2018m7) by marking metadata and catalog entries as discontinued.
- Created replacements with the more exclusive definition [47.11; 47.2 ex. 47.25], with an unchanged start date.
The series reside in the historical catalog (Sweden » Consumer » Retail Sales Index » 2015=100) and include, for example:
- WRIRFBVTUM.ISWE = [DISCONTINUED] Retail sales index: Mostly food [47.11; 47.2], (Index 2015=100, NSA)
- WRIRFTXBUM.ISWE = Retail sales index: Mostly food excl. systembolaget [47.11; 47.2 ex. 47.25], (Index 2015=100, NSA)
Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.
Please be aware that
Sale of alcoholic beverages in Sweden is via a government-owned monopoly, a chain of stores founded in 1955 called Systembolaget (a compound word, systemet "the system" and bolaget "the company").
NACE Rev. 2 branch 47.25 is "retail sale of beverages in specialized stores", which is more inclusive than alcoholic beverages. Retail sale is distinct from "beverage serving activities [56.3]" under "food and beverage service activities [56]" which encompasses bars, pubs, taverns, and similar.
