The monthly retail statistics collected by the U.S. Census Bureau are organized by kind-of-business, using SIC (the Standard Industrial Classification) from January 1967 through February 2001. The program then switched to NAICS (the North American Industrial Classification System), with history back-calculated to January 1992. The program currently uses the NAICS 2007 version.
To increase the utility of our extract, we have extended the active (NAICS-based) detailed series prior to 1992, to January 1965 or January 1967, by using the SIC-based predecessors and a classification crosswalk. The extended series, with the predecessor where there's an obvious pair, are:
- XRTFS.IUSA = Retail and food services sales - Total, (NSA)
- RTFS.IUSA = Retail and food services sales - Total, (CDASA)
- RTFSX.IUSA = Retail sales and food services excl. motor vehicles, (CDASA)
- XRT_SIC.IUSA » XRT.IUSA = Retail sales - Total, (NSA)
- RT_SIC.IUSA » RT.IUSA = Retail sales - Total, (CDASA)
- RT722.IUSA = Food services and drinking places, (CDASA)
We indicate our involvement with a secondary source citation that reads "Moody's Analytics estimated: prior to 1992 from SIC data."
The active series reside in the main U.S. historical catalog (United States » Consumer » Retail sales » Monthly Trade and Food Services) whereas the predecessors reside in the special discontinued catalog (United States (Discontinued Series) » Consumer » Monthly U.S. Retail Sales - SIC).
