Data Change: Japan - GVA - Re-referenced to 2011
Monday, 11 Sep 2017 20:01 ET
By Annie Kao
Summary
April 2017 -- As part of a benchmark revision of national accounts, the source has advanced the currency reference year from 2005 to 2011, impacting gross value added by industry (361 annual series 1994-2014, replaced by 499 from 1994).
Detail

In response, we have archived the predecessors (reference year 2005, 1994 to 2014) by marking metadata as "discontinued" and by segregating in the catalog. The replacements (reference 2011) have an unchanged start date and standardized mnemonics. Figures are billions of Japanese yen at current (Bil. JPY) or chained year-2011 (Bil. Ch. 2011 JPY) prices, or chained year-2011 volume indexes (Ch. Vol. Index 2011=100). The framework is SNA 2008 and the industry classification is JSIC 13.

The active series reside in the historical catalog (Japan » National Accounts » By value add » Reference 2011) and the predecessors under the associated "discontinued" node. They include, for example:

  • NACSGDPAFFUA.IJPN = [DISCONTINUED] Industry - Agriculture; Forestry and Fishing, (Bil. Ch. 2005 JPY)
  • NACSGVAAGUA.IJPN  = Production approach - Gross value added - Agriculture; forestry; fishing, (Bil. Ch. 2011 JPY)
  • NALSGDPMNUA.IJPN  = [DISCONTINUED] Industry - Mining, (Bil. JPY)
  • NALSGVAMQUA.IJPN  = Production approach - Gross value added - Mining, (Bil. JPY)
  • NACSGDPTOIUA.IJPN = [DISCONTINUED] Taxes and duties on imports, (Bil. Ch. 2005 JPY)
  • NACSTOVUA.IJPN    = Production approach - Taxes and duties on imports, (Bil. Ch. 2011 JPY)

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.

Please be aware that:

  • As we have progressively gained a better understanding of Japan's national accounts presentation, we have been able to standardize concept codes to improve cross-country alignment. Because the reference-2005 and -2011 vintages of this subset have very different mnemonics, but the active vintage has just as much history, we recommend that you revisit and update legacy retrievals to use only the active series.
