Data Change: Philippines - Loans by industry - Frequency
Tuesday, 06 Nov 2018 18:07 ET
By Jacky Cheung
Summary
September 2018 -- For loans outstanding (detailed by industry and purpose) for the Philippines, in 2016 the source changed the reporting frequency from quarterly to monthly (32 quarterly series 2014 to 2018, replaced by 32 monthly series from 2014).
Detail

These data were reported quarterly from 2014Q1 to 2015Q4, and monthly from January 2016. Given the nature of the data (i.e., loans outstanding is a stock measure, measured at the end of the period), these can be represented as a single series at a uniform frequency.

In response, we have:

  1. Deleted the 32 quarterly series.
  2. Created 32 one-for-one replacement monthly series. For continuity, we have translated the quarterly interval to monthly, with alternating ND values. For example, October 2015 is ND, November 2015 is ND, and December 2015 has a value.
  3. Inserted a metadata notation regarding the break in frequency.
  4. Corrected the "observed" attribute from SUM to END.

Mnemonics of the replacement monthly series are identical to the predecessor quarterly series aside from the frequency character, and correspondences include, for example, the following (old » new). Legacy retrievals will now elicit the "series not found" error. To assist in migrating, the basket editor supplies a "find and replace" tool.

  • MBLANLNTBTDUQ.IPHL » MBLANLNTBTDUM.IPHL

The series reside in the historical catalog (Philippines » Banking » Loans outstanding by industry » PSIC 2009, from 2014) and include, for example:

  • MBLALNMMTUM.IPHL   = Banking: Loans - Total; including memo items - to both residents and non-residents, (Bil. PHP, NSA)
  • MBLALNTBTDUM.IPHL  = For production by economic activity - All activities total - To residents
  • MBLALNTBEDDUM.IPHL = Education - to residents

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" that accepts a mnemonic.
