Please be aware that
The Population and Housing Census is conducted every ten years, and this dataset contains three periods. Data Buffet stores censal data using annual time series, such that intercensal years show "ND" values.
Taiwan has undergone two administrative reforms during this interval, so some series are discontinued (they describe predecessor areas) and some have less history (they describe new areas). As of 2011, three pairs of areas (large city and surrounding county) were merged, and one city was promoted:
- Kaohsiung: ITWN_KA and ITWN_KAOC merge to ITWN_KAOH
- Taichung: ITWN_TA and ITWN_TC merge to ITWN_TAIH
- Tainan: ITWN_TI and ITWN_TN merge to ITWN_TAIN
- Taipei County ITWN_TP promoted to New Taipei City ITWN_TAIP
Despite the similar names, Taipei City and New Taipei City are physically and administratively distinct areas.
In this context, the terms "country" and "subnational" are for statistical convenience. Data Buffet assigns country-type geo codes to Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, and Taiwan ROC, regardless of their constitutional status. Moody's Analytics takes no position on sovereignty disputes.
