Motivation: The ANFAVEA trade group reports exports and registrations of motor vehicles in Brazil, monthly from 1957, but only in not seasonally adjusted (NSA) terms (see related article).
Response: For analytical purposes, Moody's Analytics has created seasonally adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) counterparts for sales of five concepts (all motor vehicles, and a select list of vehicle-types: automobiles, light commercial vehicles, trucks, and buses).
Properties: Properties are generally identical to the NSA fundamentals: Figures are unitary count (#), and series start at January 1957. Expect our SAAR series to be revised upon each update to the NSA series. Supplemental series of this kind are marked in their source metadata with a secondary citation of "Moody's Analytics Adjusted".
The series reside in the historical catalog (Brazil » Consumer » Motor vehicle sales) and include, for example:
- CSQSLTMVAM.IBRA = All motor vehicles, (#, SAAR)
- CSQSLTPCUM.IBRA = Automobiles, (#, NSA)
- CSQSLTBSAM.IBRA = Buses, (#, SAAR)
Method
- Adjust each NSA series using the U.S. Census Bureau's X-13 ARIMA program.
- Calculate SAAR sales for "all motor vehicles" as the sum of SAAR sales of automobiles, light commercial vehicles, trucks, and buses.
