Data Change: Canada - Monthly Survey of Large Retailers - Redefined
Tuesday, 23 May 2017 10:15 ET
By Eric Pagan
Summary
April 2017 -- The "Monthly Survey of Large Retailers" for Canada has been redesigned by the source (11 monthly series 1997-2016, replaced by 15 series from 2017).
Detail

The previous results (CANSIM table 080-0009) reported 11 categories and subcategories by type of commodity (by an unspecified classification). The new version (table 080-0034) reports 16 categories of product sold (under NAPCS explicitly). The source wrote (citation):

Beginning with the release of data for the January 2017 reference period, Statistics Canada has updated the Large Monthly Retailers panel to improve industry coverage, and to ensure the membership better reflects the retail sector.

The commodity data from the Large Monthly Retailers panel are collected via the Monthly Retail Trade Survey questionnaire, which moved to an electronic questionnaire method in mid-2016. The data are collected using a new classification system, the North American Product Classification System, NAPCS.

In response, we have archived the predecessors (January 1997 to December 2016) by marking metadata as "discontinued" and by segregating in the catalog. The replacements (NAPCS) start at January 2017 and have standardized mnemonics. Figures are thousands of Canadian dollars (Ths. CAD) not seasonally adjusted (NSA).

The series reside in the historical catalog (Canada » Consumer » Retail trade » Monthly Survey of Large Retailers). They include, for example:

  • WRLRATCOMUM.ICAN   = [DISCONTINUED] Retail - Total commodities, (Ths. CAD, NSA)
  • WRLZLRTUM.ICAN    = Retail - Total commodities, (Ths. CAD, NSA)
  • WRLZL56121UM.ICAN = Retail services - Clothing [56121]
  • WRLZLRSVUM.ICAN   = Total retail trade commissions and miscellaneous services

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.

About our extract:

  • The NAPCS code is embedded in the mnemonic and is notated in the catalog.
  • For each series, the CANSIM vector number is notated in the "source" metadata.

About the dataset:

  • CANSIM table 080-0009 "Survey of large retailers" covers an unspecified classification that appears to be a re-aggregation of NAICS.
  • CANSIM table 080-0034 "Survey of large retailers, retail commodities" covers the intersection of intersection of enterprises (classified under NAICS 2012, 44 to 45) and the products they sell (under NAPCS Canada 2012 Version 1.1, 561 etc.). It has two main headers, "retail services except commissions" (561) and "retail trade commissions and miscellaneous services" (53112, 56211, 57111, 58111, 58121, 58122, 58131, 58141, 841).
  • The Monthly Survey of Large Retailers (5027) uses the same questionnaire, and a subset of the sample of, the quarterly Retail Commodity Survey (see related article).
