Estimates Revision: U.S. subnational - Median family income - Comprehensive update [2018]
Thursday, 03 Jan 2019 12:20 ET
By Allyson Fry
Summary
January 2019 -- We have revised our estimates of median family income by census region, state, metro area and county to incorporate the initial results of the BEA's 2018 comprehensive update to the Regional Economic Accounts (3,592 quarterly series impacted).
Detail

Motivation: The BEA recently posted initial results of the comprehensive revisions for personal income at the state and local geo levels (in September and December, respectively), in connection with the five-year comprehensive update to NIPA. These revisions have been incorporated into our personal income estimates, specifically into estimates of wages and salaries.

Response: We have incorporated these revisions into our quarterly median family income estimates from 2001; history from 1949 to 2000 is unrevised. Because the BEA's initial release is revised only for years 2001 to 2017, values before 2001 are potentially inconsistent; this will be resolved in early 2019 when it disseminates revisions for the remaining years.

Properties

  • Measurement: Nominal U.S. dollars (USD), seasonally adjusted (SA)
  • Frequency: Quarterly
  • Start date: 1949Q1
  • Geo coverage: Census regions and divisions, states, MSAs and metro divisions, counties
  • Additivity: Across geographies

What you will see: All areas revised from 2001.

The estimates reside in the historical catalog (United States » Income » Family Income » Median family income » Moody's Analytics Estimates) and include, for example:

  • RYFMMEDQ.GA        = Median family income, (USD, SA) - for Georgia
  • RYFMMEDQ.IUSA_MATL = for Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA metropolitan area
  • RYFMMEDQ.GA015     = for Barlow county, GA

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.

Method: Please see the background documentation in Mnemonic 411.
