Data Change: Chile - RSI - Reclassified and rebased to 2014
Tuesday, 18 Apr 2017 14:35 ET
By Mary Krajsa, Megan McGee
March 2017 -- For the detailed retail sales index, the source has advanced the activity classification from ISIC Rev. 3 to 4, and the base year from 2009 to 2014 (15 monthly series 2012-2016, replaced by 19 from 2014). We have also synchronized our SA supplement.

In response, we have archived the predecessors (ISIC Rev. 3, 2009=100, January 2012 to December 2016) by marking their description metadata as "discontinued" and by segregating in the catalog. The replacements (ISIC Rev. 4, 2014=100) start at January 2014. Reported figures are not seasonally adjusted (NSA).

The seres reside in the historical catalog (Chile » Consumer » Retail Sales Index » 2014=100) and the associated "discontinued" node. They include, for example:

  • WRIROTTUM.ICHL = [DISCONTINUED] Retail Sales Index: Real Value - Total, (2009=100, NSA)
  • WRIRATTUM.ICHL = [DISCONTINUED] Retail Sales Index: Nominal Value - Total
  • WRJRTUM.ICHL   = Retail sales: General index, (Vol. Index 2014=100, NSA)
  • WRJ45UM.ICHL   = Retail sales: Wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles [45], (Vol. Index 2014=100, NSA)

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.

About the dataset:

  • The replacement dataset consists entirely of volume indexes (i.e., adjusted to constant prices); the predecessor had a value index (at current prices) version of the general index.
  • Classifications CIIU Rev. 3 and CIIU Rev. 4 2012 are the Chilean localizations of UN ISIC Rev. 3 and Rev. 4, respectively.
  • Unlike the prior retail sales index ("IVCM"), the "trade activity index" ("IAC") includes wholesale and retail trade to provide a more complete and accurate analysis of the commerce sector in a single index.

About our extract:

  • We have standardized the mnemonics of the replacement series. Continued use of legacy baskets will retrieve the discontinued series.
  • For analytic convenience we have extended the history of the NSA general index, improving the start date from January 2014 to January 2005, by using the corresponding predecessor (2009=100).
  • As a supplement, we compute a seasonally adjusted (SA) counterpart to the general volume index. We have synchronized this (WRIROTTAM.ICHL vs. WRJRTAM.ICHL).
