Estimates Revision: Ireland subnational - NA employment
Thursday, 06 Apr 2017 07:30 ET
By Allyson Fry
Summary
March 2017 -- We have revised our estimates of national accounts employment for Ireland and its subnational areas to compensate for a definitional break at 2011 (364 quarterly series revised from 1998).
Detail

Motivation: Eurostat publishes national accounts employment for Ireland and its NUTS level 2 and 3 areas with a break in coverage at 2011 in the national dataset. The underlying source applied a new methodology which considers employment data from the "Earnings, Hours and Employment Survey" (EHECS), causing a break in the employment and hours data; this change is more pronounced for certain granular activities (industries).

Response: We have amended our national estimation methodology to align with the new historical methodology, and have revised the time series prior to 2011. We interpolated growth rates at the break, then extended back from the 2011 level. Our subnational methodology has not changed, but we recalculated the NUTS level 2 and 3 areas to align with the national results.

Properties: Generally unchanged (see related articles: national, subnational).

The estimates reside in the historical catalog (Ireland » National Accounts » Branch Accounts » Employment » Moody's Analytics Estimates) and include, for example:

  • REICQ.IIRL     = Information and communication [J] - for national Ireland
  • RESECQ.IIRL_SE = Secondary industries [C to F] - for NUTS 2 Southern and Eastern
  • REWRQ.IIRL_SOW = Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles [G] - for NUTS 3 South-West (IE)

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.
