By Skylar Bowman
Summary
April 2016 -- Data Buffet now carries the World Bank "Global Financial Development" dataset, which measures depth, access, efficiency and stability of financial institutions and markets for over 200 countries (over 18,000 new annual series from 1960).
Detail

Units vary. Series start as early as 1960; some series have been truncated by the source. There are 115 concepts; geo coverage is 206 individual countries and 14 country-aggregates; not all concept-geo combinations exist.

The series reside in the historical catalog (Cross-Country Datasets » World Bank » Global Financial Development) and include, for example:

  • WBKGFDDOI06UA.IALB  = Assets of five largest banks - As a share of total commercial banking assets, (%) - for Albania
  • WBKGFDDDM14UA.IZAF  = Syndicated loan average maturity, (# years) - for South Africa
  • WBKGFDDAI02UA.IMDIC = Bank branches, (# per 100 Ths. adults) - for Middle Income Countries

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.

About the dataset:

About our extract:

  • Due to the variety and specialized nature of the measurements, many unit-descriptors do not follow our usual standards. To properly interpret and use, please familiarize yourself with the source's own documentation.
  • We have detected discrepancies in the data, but the source assures us these are as-reported by the individual countries.
  • The World Bank's identifier is embedded in our concept code and is notated in the "source" metadata. For example, WBKGFDDAI02UA is our copy of GFDD.AI.02.
