Data Note: U.S. subnational - BOC County Business Patterns - Redundant
Thursday, 18 May 2017 16:14 ET
By Allyson Blizman
Summary
May 2017 -- We have identified 26,155 redundant state-level series in our extract of the U.S. Census Bureau annual "County Business Patterns" dataset. We have converged the mnemonics, so there will be no interruption to legacy retrievals.
Detail

We have identified inconsistencies in our coding that created duplicate series. In response, we have deleted the redundant series, but have preserved their mnemonics as aliases on the survivors. The only change you will perceive is to the metadata.

The U.S. Census Bureau "County Business Patterns" (CBP) dataset provides business statistics (employment, payroll, establishments) by industry, annually, at several subnational geo levels. Figures are unitary counts (#) or thousands of U.S. dollars (Ths. USD). The series start as early as 1975. Geo coverage is the nation and 51 states or state-like areas.

The series reside in the historical catalog (United States » Labor Markets » Employment » Other employment surveys » County Business Patterns (CBP) - BOC) and include, for example:

  • EPLFNG48.IUSA = EPLFNGTR.IUSA = Employment: 250-499 Employees - Non-Profits - Transportation and Warehousing, (#) - for the nation
  • WP31A.PA      = WPMFA.PA      = Payroll: Manufacturing, (Ths. USD) - for Pennsylvania
  • NP48.DC       = NPTR.DC       = Establishments: Transportation and Warehousing, (#) - for District of Columbia

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.
