Question
Under the Census 2000 delineations, what counties comprise the New York MSA, metropolitan division, and city (MNEY, DMNEY, and NY51000)?
Answer
The metropolitan statistical area (MSA) informally called "New York" (Moody's Analytics geo code MNEY) consists of 23 counties across three states. It is one of 11 large MSAs that are divided into smaller metropolitan divisions. Of these, the New York metropolitan division (DMNEY) consists of 11 counties in two states, five of which comprise New York City proper (NY51000); these five are coextensive with the traditional "boroughs" of the city. By area, the largest borough (or county) of the five is Queens, at 108 square miles (280 square kilometers). The most populous is Brooklyn (Kings County), with 2.3 million people (1990 census).
"Long Island" consists of Nassau and Suffolk counties, a.k.a. the Nassau-Suffolk metropolitan division (DMNAS).

Background
Many datasets contain series for the metropolitan divisions instead of the larger MSAs. A few have both, so be careful to avoid double-counting.
Metropolitan statistical areas, metropolitan divisions and related geo types (collectively called "core-based statistical areas") are defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget for statistical purposes, and have no relation to local governmental divisions, in part because CBSAs can straddle state boundaries.
We offer a variety of geographic support files in the "Reference Files" section of DataBuffet.com. County- and city-type geographies have geo codes of the forms AAnnn and AAnnnnn, respectively.
