Data Change: U.S. subnational - CPS family income - Re-referenced to 2017
Thursday, 20 Sep 2018 16:47 ET
By Megan Hilaman
Summary
September 2018 -- Concurrent with dissemination of 2017 results for the Current Population Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau (BOC), for family income, the source has advanced the currency reference year from 2016 to 2017 (20 annual series, replaced from 1953).
Detail

In response, we have:

  1. Archived the predecessors (2016 USD, 1953 to 2016) by renaming with an "_16" archive predecessor, marking the metadata as "discontinued", and by segregating in the catalog.
  2. Created one-for-one replacements (2017 USD).
  3. Refurbished metadata on both predecessor and replacement subsets by specifying the currency reference year in the unit-descriptors.

Dataset properties:

  • Measurements: U.S. dollars at current prices (USD) or constant year-2017 prices (2017 USD)
  • Adjustment: Implicitly not seasonally adjustment (NSA)
  • Geo coverage: U.S., all four U.S. regions (CNER CNCR CSOR CWER)
  • Native frequency: Annual
  • Start date: 1953

The series reside in the historical catalog (United States » Income » Family income » Current Population Survey) and include, for example:

  • CPSFMYAVG$_16A.IUSA = [DISCONTINUED] Income: Average family income - All races, (2016 USD)
  • CPSFMYAVG$A.IUSA    = Average family income - All races, (2017 USD)
  • CPSFMYMED$A.CSOR    = Median family income - All races, (2017 USD) - for the South Region
  • CPSFMYAVGA.CWER     = Average family income - All races, (USD) - for the West Region

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.

Please be aware that

  • This is a routine annual process for this dataset. Expect the currency reference year to be advanced each year at about this time. To monitor the unit-descriptor, include the "description" header in your basket output.
  • For the parallel current-price series, there is no change in metadata, although other kinds of revision may apply. We have archived and discontinued those series as well.
