In response, we have archived the predecessors (2010=100, 21 series, January 2002 to December 2016) by marking metadata as "discontinued" and by segregating in the catalog. The replacements (2015=100) start at January 2002. We have expanded our data coverage by adding two new categories and 10 new cities.
Sales levels are million, 100 million, or billion Japanese yen (Mil. JPY, 100 Mil. JPY, Bil. JPY), not seasonally adjusted (NSA). Indexes are based to 2015=100 and are seasonally adjusted (SA). Geo coverage is the nation, 11 of 47 prefectures (geo code pattern IJPN_^^), and 10 cities of various types (IJPN_^^^) including the Ku-area of Tokyo-To (IJPN_KUT). Not all concept-geo combinations exist.
The active series reside in the historical catalog (Japan » Consumer » Current Survey of Commerce » 2015=100) and the predecessors under the associated "discontinued" node. They include, for example:
- WRICSVFHAM.IJPN = [DISCONTINUED] Wholesale - Furniture & House Furnishings (Index, 2010=100, SA)
- WRICSVTAM.IJPN = [DISCONTINUED] Total, (Index, 2010=100, SA)
- WRLLRSVTUM.IJPN_KUT = [DISCONTINUED] Large Scale Retail Sales Value, (100 Mil. JPY, NSA) - for Ku-area of Tokyo
- WRLW551UM.IJPN = Wholesale - Furniture and house furnishings, (Bil. JPY, NSA)
- WRITTTAM.IJPN = Wholesale and retail - Total, (Index 2015=100, SA)
- WRLRZLTTTUM.IJPN_HAM = Retail - Large - Department stores and supermarkets - Total, (Mil. JPY, NSA) - for Hamamatsu [city]
Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.
About the dataset:
- The "Commercial Sales" dataset is derived from the "Current Survey of Commerce."
- The scope is JSIC division "I" (wholesale and retail trade).
- The merchandise type is organized by the Industrial Classification for the Current Survey of Commerce, which is an aggregation over JSIC Rev. 12 (see chapter 11 of "Note for use").

About our extract:
- For the "wholesale value by goods" subset, we have standardized the fragment that represents the ICCSC category. For legacy users of the corresponding subset of the predecessor, we have provided aliases. However, the remainder of the concept code has also changed.
